Day 46: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Karajan)

My listening spot of choice this morning is, once again, our balcony. Truth be told, it’s my favorite place to listen to music and write. But it means I’ll have to drive farther to get to my office when I’m done; whereas, if I was at Panera I’d be a mile and a half from … [Read more…]

Day 41: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Bohm)

My office this morning, once again, overlooks the small lake behind our residence. It’s a bit chilly this morning (65 degrees Fahrenheit) under partly cloudy skies. So, unlike on previous mornings, I had to wear what I call a “shammy,” which is in this case an oversized, button-down flannel shirt I purchased from Cabela’s. Don’t … [Read more…]

Day 39: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Bernstein)

I won’t lie. I think Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) is my favorite conductor of Beethoven’s symphonies. Whenever I listen to one of Bernstein’s performances, I’m filled with joy, awe, and reverence. I am caught up in his unbridled enthusiasm because I think the orchestra is, too. Even this, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major, … [Read more…]

Day 37: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Abbado)

This morning, I return to the top of the batting order with Italian conductor Claudio Abbado (1933-2014). The orchestra is the Berliner Philharmoniker. The record label is the legendary 120-year-old Deutsche Grammophon. The only difference this time is I’m listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major, Opus 55 – also known as … [Read more…]

Day 29: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Karajan)

I enjoy listening to Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) back to back like this, especially comparing his two most prized Beethoven cycles: 1963 and 1977. Although a reader’s poll on the Talk Classical site, indicates most of those who responded preferred Karajan’s 1963 cycle by a margin of more than two to one, I … [Read more…]

Day 28: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Karajan)

This morning’s conductor of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major is the legendary Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989). His orchestra is the legendary Berliner Philharmoniker. The record label is equally as legendary: Deutsche Grammophon, with its famous yellow logo. And, legendary upon legendary upon legendary, the recording comes from Karajan’s famed 1963 Beethoven cycle. So … [Read more…]

Day 23: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Bohm)

This morning’s “office” is Panera Bread, the restaurant chain that I have a dislike-hate relationship with. If Panera weren’t the only game in town at 6am (when I like to get started), I’d go somewhere else. I first encountered Austrian conductor Karl Bohm (1894-1981) on Day 5. This morning, as then, he works with the … [Read more…]

Day 21: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Bernstein)

This morning, my office is Spyro’s restaurant, which bills itself as “Fort Wayne’s Breakfast Eggsperts!” The coffee is good. The Irish Skillet is wonderful. And the biscuits and gravy were better than I expected. The only downside is I’m using my iPhone’s Personal Hotspot setting as my WiFi connection. This restaurant doesn’t offer WiFi to … [Read more…]

Day 19: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Abbado)

This morning, Day 19 of my exploration of Beethoven’s symphonies, starts a new chapter: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, which was composed between 1801 and 1802. So here I sit at New Beginnings restaurant, listening to Beethoven’s composition while (or whilst if you’re British) I eat a Mexican chicken omelette complete with jalapenos and … [Read more…]

Day 11: Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Karajan)

This morning’s conductor of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major is, once again, Herbert von Karajan – this time from the legendary 1977 cycle. As with his performance in the 1963 cycle, the orchestra for the ’77 is still the Berliner Philharmoniker. (I wonder if any musicians from 1977 were present at the recording … [Read more…]
