Day 43: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Furtwangler)

Today, I have the legendary German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler on tap. Speaking of which, my office this morning would have been outside on the deck surrounded by lovely flowers in pots and a nice view of the turtles, fish, herons, and ducks on the lake. As it is, my office while I listen to Beethoven’s … [Read more…]

Day 41: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Bohm)

My office this morning, once again, overlooks the small lake behind our residence. It’s a bit chilly this morning (65 degrees Fahrenheit) under partly cloudy skies. So, unlike on previous mornings, I had to wear what I call a “shammy,” which is in this case an oversized, button-down flannel shirt I purchased from Cabela’s. Don’t … [Read more…]

Day 39: Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major (Bernstein)

I won’t lie. I think Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) is my favorite conductor of Beethoven’s symphonies. Whenever I listen to one of Bernstein’s performances, I’m filled with joy, awe, and reverence. I am caught up in his unbridled enthusiasm because I think the orchestra is, too. Even this, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major, … [Read more…]

Day 33: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Rattle)

My office this morning is at a restaurant-chain-that-must-not-be-named, known for its signature Light Roast coffee (when the pot actually has some in it!). As soon as I finish this, I will pack up and go to the office where I’m working on a screenplay and a book project. For now, though, I watch people meet, … [Read more…]

Day 25: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Furtwangler)

Two years ago (2016-2017), I experienced a musical exploration of Bruckner’s nine primary symphonies from the perspective of some two dozen conductors. Somewhere along the way (probably when I got to the “F” letter of the alphabet), I discovered Wilhelm Furtwangler (1886-1954). I was immediately taken with the historic nature of the recordings and wanted … [Read more…]

Day 23: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Bohm)

This morning’s “office” is Panera Bread, the restaurant chain that I have a dislike-hate relationship with. If Panera weren’t the only game in town at 6am (when I like to get started), I’d go somewhere else. I first encountered Austrian conductor Karl Bohm (1894-1981) on Day 5. This morning, as then, he works with the … [Read more…]

Day 21: Symphony No. 2 in D Major (Bernstein)

This morning, my office is Spyro’s restaurant, which bills itself as “Fort Wayne’s Breakfast Eggsperts!” The coffee is good. The Irish Skillet is wonderful. And the biscuits and gravy were better than I expected. The only downside is I’m using my iPhone’s Personal Hotspot setting as my WiFi connection. This restaurant doesn’t offer WiFi to … [Read more…]

Day 15: Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Rattle)

This morning’s conductor of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major is Liverpool-born conductor Simon Rattle (1955- ) working his magic with the Weiner Philharmoniker. Warner Classics is the record label. At 63, Rattle might very well be the youngest conductor to which I’ll listen during my exploration of Beethoven’s nine symphonic works. He was … [Read more…]

Day 14: Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Monteux)

This morning’s conductor of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major is a fellow I had never heard of before, Frenchman (Pierre Monteux), on an Italian record label I’d never heard of before (Memories Reverence). And those two reasons are precisely why I chose this no-frills box set. And I do mean no frills. There … [Read more…]

Day 7: Symphony No. 1 in C Major (Furtwangler)

This morning’s conductor is the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler (1886-1954). The orchestra is the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic). The venue is the Royal Albert Hall in London. Maestro Furtwangler died two years after this recording was made. I first encountered Wilhelm Furtwangler during my Bruckner projects. Something about him – maybe I just like saying his … [Read more…]
